James Adger Smyth papers, 1863-1870.

Most of the papers consist of tax records (1863-1865), including receipts for payment of Confederate taxes, tax in kind forms for agricultural products for James Adger Smyth's plantation in Clarendon District (S.C.), and a newspaper clipping (Oct. 1864) concerning the collection of the tax in kind on agricultural produce. Other financial records include a certificate of payment issued to Rev. Thomas Smyth for Confederate bonds (1864). Correspondence consists of two letters, the earliest of which (Oct. 1863) is from Augustine T. Smythe in Charleston (S.C.) to his brother James Adger Smyth congratulating the latter on the birth of a son. Smythe reminds his brother that the child is a gift from God and advises "Make not an idol of him." Smythe also describes the battered condition of Fort Sumter and enemy attacks on it. A letter to James Adger Smyth from R. J. Ragin concerns Ragin's failure to procure receipts for "hands" (slaves, named in document) who were transported by train. Postwar documents consist of two articles of agreement. The first is an agreement (Dec. 1869) between James Adger Smyth and freedmen (named) employed on his Clarendon [County] plantation [Cedar Grove]; the second is an agreement (1870)between Smyth and a freedman, James Watson, for Watson's position of superintendent of the hands on the plantation.
